Collection photography analysis
In the work of Todd Mclennan's "Things come apart", we see a clock in which involves destructions and order. In this photograph you can see the parts of the clock clearly but displayed in a falling manner which creates a bigger affect on the audience. Todd McLennan tries to represent the clock as a whole object but with the title "Things come apart", it is represented in a different manner which creates a creative but destructive meaning towards the image.
The theme of this work is Collections which demonstrates a group of physical objects which are similar or the same in a collective group but displaying a meaning toward the audience. In this image it is a collection of parts put together but seen as a whole while still knowing what the object original was. The clearest formal element shown through the work of Todd McLennan is the space between each individual part which builds up the clock so that the audience can see each part clearly without them being clustered together. However a technique such as depth of field was not used as this photograph is not close up and is shot in individual parts to create one image based upon the title of "Things come apart".
Through my research of Todd McLennan's work, I found that he completed a whole project which was based around the title of "Things come apart" which is collections of objects which have come apart carefully but when placed as demonstrated in his photographs, you can still tell what the original object is. The subject matter is described in the title of the project but the photographer is demonstrating how even when you break an object up, it can still be seen as the clear and fully constructed object.
To separate this photograph from others I have seen from Todd McLennan's project, I found it different and showed an object disassembled and virtually exploding in mid air. In other images, the parts are laid down and can carefully show the straight lines of how they have been carefully put together. While in this image it shows the parts falling from mid air but carefully spaced from each other to give the audience an understanding of what the original image. Others (shown below) were much more close together and harder to see what Todd McLennan was trying to show but through this image, it is clear and more representative of the title.
In my own response, I believe this photograph demonstrates the title of "Things come apart" perfectly and show how one object can come apart and create a completely different image even though the audiences sees it in the same way. To influence my own work in this style, I could talk something which is not usually recognized and create it into something using the parts of something different.
