From this image create by Lee Friedlander, I can see that he is using reflection and a mirror to see what is around the camera. By looking through the mirror, the audience can see the city and the street the buildings tower over. In front of the window, we see the emptiness of the park or playground which can be compared with the empty street.
The theme of this photograph or photo shoot was to see how reflection can be compared with one image with another. The view from behind the car and the view from in front of the car. The formal elements I noticed are how the photographer has used the light on the street while the buildings are dark but it is shown by the clear sharp edges of the outline. The photographer is trying to show that the theme is important because it shows how we miss things from behind us. The camera is not just capturing one scene but two as we see what is behind us from which we have just passed. If I could interview the photographer I would ask him why he used an area where there were no people around to show the message of the photograph. This image is different from other images I have seen because it can be seen from a different perspective as I believe that in this image we can see an empty street which is unusual. This means the photographer wanted to show something different to the audience by showing how you can take an image that can be compared to a busy street. If I was inside this image, it would be quite and different compared to a busy life in the city. When making an analysis of Lee Friedlander's work, I could see that his work is different from other photographers because he thinks about the setting and how the audience will see it. From looking at the image, it will inspire me to think about how I can see a setting from more than one perspective that is different from a normal surrounding area. |
Lee Friedlander's work is mainly based on the idea of reflection and how we can see an image from more than one perspective through reflection. From this image, I can see a women looking at her own reflection in the window of the shop on the busy street. By seeing this women look at herself in the window, we can see that the photographer has not manipulated this image but timed it so the women will look at the shop.
The theme of the image is reflection and how we see ourselves in our own reflection but capturing it in the camera. The formal elements that I notice are the dark areas on the women but the main focus of the image is on the reflection in the shop window. The techniques used in this image are the editing which has given the reflection in the image a bigger focus and made it stand out when see by an audience. Lee Friedlander is trying to show how we can capture key moments which we don't notice such as looking at our own reflection in the shop window. If I was to ask the photographer a question, I would ask what influenced him to take a picture using the idea of seeing your own reflection in a window. This image is different from other images I have seen because it shows that he wanted to show the effect of seeing an image from a different perspective. From other images I have seen from Lee Friedlander's work, he uses the technique of reflection but he expresses it in a variety of ways that would not be noticed in a normal day. He captures the moments we just walk past and don't acknowledge such as walking past a shop and glancing into the shop window. When looking at this work, I think about how he has used the idea of looking at objects or scenes in a different perspective and this gives the work a bigger message as well as an idea towards the audience. From looking and evaluating this image, I can be influenced to think about how I will look at something differently as if we would pass it everyday and not take notice of it. |
